With twelve major areas of study and an outstanding faculty in a renovated facility with state-of-the-art equipment, MSU’s department of Art + Design is one of the best and the most affordable in the region. Our alumni, faculty, and students contribute to their communities and fields while having fun doing it.

The department’s 535+ majors are active in five undergraduate and two graduate degrees within twelve disciplines: Art History, 3D Studies (Ceramics, Sculpture, Metal/Jewelry), Photography, Printmaking, Graphic Design, Illustration, Computer Animation, Electronic Arts, and Digital Arts, Art Education, Painting and Drawing, and Visual Studies. The department also offers minors in Art, Design, Art History, and Museum Studies. Faculty teaching within the department are all practicing artists, designers, or scholars, many of whom are award-winning or well-known within their disciplines nationally or internationally.

Graphic Design and Illustration Students in the Design program explore a wide range of subjects including Web design, information architecture, interactive new media, information graphics, applied typography, editorial design and publication, branding, identity and a broad range of topics related to illustration and applied image-making. We teach designers to create visual communication of value that is responsive to the needs and wants of society. This program has been recognized by national and international professional design organizations and publications as one of the best in the region and nation. Our students have also received recognition in the form of scholarships, competition and exhibition awards, and publication of their works.
